**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and questions about what the future would hold. I was about to embark on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, trials, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and how do I feel now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you are a potential student, this might be a major concern for you as well. I distinctly remember my first day moving into my accommodation—I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. However, looking at my current situation, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The essential takeaway? Take the plunge. Even if you feel uncertain, there will be numerous chances to connect with people through ice-breakers and social gatherings. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re likely to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the rigors of university coursework and the heightened complexity of what I was learning. The shift from A-levels was apparent, and the transition between the first and second terms was even more challenging. At times, I questioned my abilities, especially when I noticed others studying and felt as though I was falling behind.
What got me through this period? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone. If I was grappling with a topic, it was likely that others were as well. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One of the most comforting aspects of my journey was the outstanding support from the materials department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative allowed me to build connections with staff, which turned out to be incredibly helpful. There are many avenues to foster relationships with lecturers and support staff, and doing this can profoundly enhance your university experience. My major takeaway? Utilize the help available—there’s never such a thing as too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has shown me that many of the apprehensions I had prior to starting university were unfounded. With the appropriate backing—from both faculty and peers—those initial fears quickly dissipated. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone and that it is possible to juggle academic pressures while enjoying the university experience.
For anyone about to start their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: welcome the challenges, seek assistance when needed, and most importantly, relish the experience.
