**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university. As someone who has always been introverted, embarking on this new journey felt quite daunting. Reflecting now, my first year has been a path of personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered early on was the struggle to make friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. The idea of meeting new individuals can be intimidating. On my initial day in student housing, I was so overwhelmed that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve met have turned into a second family for me. It just required stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were in similar situations.

The main takeaway for me? Take that initial leap early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself—Imperial is rich in diversity, and you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of university studies. The leap from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more challenging. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when I observed others studying and felt like I was lagging behind.

What propelled me forward was the understanding that I wasn’t in this alone. If I was grappling with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether reaching out to classmates or professors, seeking help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting elements of my course has been the exceptional support from the faculty. The staff in the Materials department genuinely wish for students to thrive. They are aware of the hurdles we face and maintain clear communication throughout the year to address our needs.

Although I only fully utilized pastoral support later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Taking on the role of well-being representative enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved to be an incredible opportunity. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My prime message? Take advantage of the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

As I look back, my first year has revealed that the fears and anxieties I held before starting university were largely misplaced. With the proper backing from staff and fellow students, those concerns became manageable. I have come to realize that I am never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands while enjoying university life.

For anyone about to begin their own university adventure—embrace the challenges, seek support when needed, and above all, relish the experience.
