### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was apprehensive, uncertain, and full of doubts about what was to come. As a newcomer about to embark on my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself venturing into a world I was not familiar with. Being naturally reserved and timid, embracing this new chapter felt intimidating. However, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was the process of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, right before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too nervous to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I have built some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has turned into a second home for me, all it took was engaging in some light conversation with people who were experiencing the same challenges.

So, what have I taken away from this? First, making the effort to connect early is crucial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t stress—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student community, you are sure to find individuals who share your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was quite noticeable, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s common to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others study, but one of the key lessons I discovered was that we are all navigating similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others are facing similar challenges.

The best approach to tackle these obstacles is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty. Cultivating the ability to seek support is vital during your first year.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the standout aspects of my experience has been the outstanding support from the staff in the Materials department. They genuinely wish for students to achieve success and are always ready to discuss any challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained continuous communication with us, ensuring we received the support we needed.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the advisory support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members—an experience I found tremendously rewarding. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support available to you—there is no such thing as too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I carried prior to starting university were unfounded. Whether it was forming friendships, managing academic stresses, or reaching out for support, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to balance pressure with enjoyment and how to welcome the challenges that university life presents.

If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and most importantly, be yourself. You will find your niche, just as I did.
