**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my previously introverted and reserved self. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the challenge of making new connections. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a significant concern for you. On my first day in student housing, just before the term kicked off, I spent an entire day in my room, feeling too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, looking back today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it just took a bit of casual conversation with peers who were experiencing the same feelings as I was.

So, what have I taken away from this? That brave first step is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and possibilities to engage with others. Most crucially, just be your authentic self. With such a varied student body, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was quite pronounced, and the leap from the first term to the second was even greater. Being in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence—you may observe others studying and feel as though you’re not accomplishing enough.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar circumstances. If something isn’t clear, it’s likely others are grappling with it too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can acquire during your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

This leads me to another significant realization: the staff in the Materials department are remarkably supportive. They truly desire for students to thrive and grasp the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later on, I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I stepped up and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most substantial piece of advice? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during the year was often unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to assist you in tackling various challenges. Most importantly, I have realized that I am never truly alone and that it is indeed possible to relish university life even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.

As you prepare to embark on your journey at Imperial, embrace the opportunity, take those bold steps, and remember that support is always within reach when you need it.
