**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the future. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. In hindsight, I realize this year has been packed with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Confronting the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges of beginning university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. I certainly did. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, as the year unfolded, I formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
I’ve come to view Imperial as a second family, and all it took was striking up casual conversations with those in similar situations. My main piece of advice? Take that initial step. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is part of a vibrant community, and you’re bound to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands was another significant hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more challenging. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when I saw others studying fervently. However, I quickly acknowledged that everyone was grappling with similar difficulties.
If something doesn’t make sense to you, it’s likely others are confused too—so don’t be afraid to seek assistance. This is one of the most essential lessons I absorbed during my first year. Whether reaching out to peers or asking professors for guidance, seeking help is vital for academic achievement.
### The Significance of Support Networks
One of the highlights of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial is the outstanding support provided by the faculty. The staff genuinely want students to thrive and are always willing to address our concerns. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner.
Initially, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that many of the worries I had before entering university were unwarranted. With adequate support from faculty and peers, I managed to navigate obstacles and experience growth both academically and personally. Most importantly, I learned how to balance stress with enjoyment, even during exam periods.
To anyone on the brink of starting their university adventure: embrace the journey, take that first step, and remember that you are never on your own.
