**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the future. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been rather introverted, stepping into a brand-new environment felt daunting. Reflecting on this past year, I can recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?

### Conquering the Apprehension of Building Friendships

One of the most significant challenges I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re contemplating studying here, this concern may resonate with you as well. I vividly recall my first day in student housing, where I spent the entirety of it tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and engage with others. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The essential lesson? Take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous icebreakers and social events will facilitate connections with others. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to meet individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Adjusting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and heightened complexity of university material. The shift from A-levels was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. At times, I questioned whether I was keeping pace, particularly when witnessing my peers studying diligently.

What got me through was the realization that I wasn’t isolated—many of my classmates were in the same boat. The best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, seeking out support is one of the most valuable abilities you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Significance of Staff Support

One of the most comforting elements of my experience has been the outstanding assistance from the Materials Science department. The professors truly desire for students to thrive and are consistently open to discussions regarding any challenges we encounter. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier.

At the outset, I bravely took on the role of a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with faculty members. Getting to know your professors and staff can be immensely rewarding, and numerous chances to do so are available. My key lesson? Utilize the support offered—you can never have too much help!

### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I had prior to starting university were unfounded. Countless support systems exist, both from faculty and fellow students, to aid in navigating university challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that I can balance academic demands with a gratifying and enjoyable student life.

For anyone set to embark on their university journey—embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity.
