**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself consumed by anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone naturally shy and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize it has been a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the outset was the challenge of making friends. If you are considering this path, you might share similar concerns. I recall moving into my dorm a few days ahead of the academic term and spending an entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I could imagine. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others in the same predicament.

So, what’s the takeaway? Taking that initial step is undeniably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be countless ice-breaking activities and chances to meet new people. Most significantly, just be yourself—Imperial hosts a wealth of diverse personalities, and you’re certain to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Challenges

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the coursework and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was markedly substantial, and there was an even more drastic change between the first and second terms. At times, it became easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, especially when witnessing others study and seemingly comprehend concepts more quickly than I did.

What aided me in persevering was the awareness that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were grappling with it as well. The most vital lesson I absorbed was the importance of seeking help—whether it be from classmates or faculty. Asking for assistance is not a manifestation of weakness but rather an essential strategy for thriving at university.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most rewarding aspects of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial is the exceptional support provided by the staff. They genuinely care about student success and recognize the difficulties we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open dialogue with us and offered invaluable insights.

Though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the academic year, I regret not doing so sooner. Early in the term, I took a proactive step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with faculty members. This proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university life. My primary takeaway? Seize the available support—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during my university journey was often unwarranted. A multitude of support systems exists—from faculty to fellow students—to aid you in navigating challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and it is entirely possible to balance academic demands with enjoyment and fun.

If you’re on the verge of starting university, my advice is straightforward: take that initial leap, seek help when necessary, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never imagined, and before long, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about an amazing first year—just as I am right now.
