**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and excitement as I began my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown felt intimidating, particularly for someone who has always been a bit shy and introverted. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time filled with growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Fear of Socializing
One of the significant obstacles I encountered was the task of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day at the student accommodation, I was so daunted that I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone. Yet, fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had.
What’s the crucial takeaway? Seize the opportunity at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most significantly, remain authentic—Imperial is a melting pot of cultures, and you’re sure to find those with similar interests.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
The shift from A-levels to university coursework presented another challenge. The increase in workload was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was particularly intense. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others study with confidence. However, I quickly came to understand that everyone was navigating similar waters. If I found a concept difficult, it was likely that others were as well.
The best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or instructors, it’s essential to look for support. Learning to ask questions and collaborate with others significantly enhanced my academic experience.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most beneficial elements of my first year was the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about the well-being and academic success of students. They recognize the hurdles we face and maintain open lines of communication to tackle our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of year well-being representative allowed me to engage with staff, which turned out to be immensely helpful. There are numerous ways to connect with professors and support services, and I highly encourage maximizing these opportunities. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the fears and worries I held before entering university were mostly unfounded. With the backing of friends, staff, and various resources, I learned that I was never truly alone. More importantly, I discovered how to balance academic demands with enjoyment, fully embracing my university adventure.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, be aware that challenges will arise, but so will remarkable opportunities for personal growth. Take the plunge, ask for assistance, and savor the experience—you won’t regret it!
