**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by nerves, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what awaited me. As someone who had formerly been shy and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, hurdles, and extraordinary experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the challenge of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may feel similarly. During my first day in student housing, I was so nervous that I spent the whole day hidden away in my room, hesitant to introduce myself to others. However, looking at where I am now, I can proudly say that I’ve established some of the best friendships I could have hoped for.
The main takeaway? Take the plunge. It may feel awkward at first, but there are many icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Struggles
The leap from A-levels to university-level studies was a considerable shift, and the hurdles only intensified from the first to the second term. There were times I questioned my capabilities, especially when I observed others studying diligently and felt inadequate in comparison.
What aided me during these times? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone. If I found a topic challenging, it was likely that my peers faced similar struggles. The best advice I can offer is to seek help—be it from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for support is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire in your freshman year.
### The Significance of Support from Faculty
One of the most pleasant surprises of my freshman year was the level of support provided by the teaching staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to input. Although I didn’t fully access pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not leveraging it sooner.
Early in the term, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty. This proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with academic staff, and doing so can significantly influence your educational experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has illuminated that the fears and anxieties I harbored before commencing university were largely unfounded. With adequate support—from both faculty and fellow students—these concerns became manageable. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and it is entirely possible to navigate academic challenges while having a fulfilling university experience.
If you’re on the verge of starting your own university journey, my straightforward advice is to embrace it, seek support when necessary, and permit yourself to develop. You may just astonish yourself with what you can accomplish.
