**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding my future. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and entering this uncharted territory was a departure from the shy and reserved individual I had always been. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

A significant and daunting aspect I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be high on your list of worries as well. On my first day in student housing, just before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. However, as I reflect from my current position, I can proudly state that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships in my life—friends who feel like family.

What’s the lesson here? Taking that initial step is always a worthwhile endeavor. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable right away, that’s completely fine! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to encounter others. Above all, just authentically be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was quite significant, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more profound. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your self-esteem—you may witness others studying and feel as though you’re falling short.

What supported me during these times? I constantly reminded myself that we’re all facing similar struggles. If something doesn’t click for you, it’s likely others are grappling with it as well. The best course of action is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from peers or faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from Staff and Well-being Programs

One aspect that impressed me was the exceptional support provided by the staff in the Materials department. They truly wish to see students thrive and recognize the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and offered a variety of support resources.

Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Early on, I took a courageous step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This opportunity allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these chances. My key takeaway? Never hesitate to access the support available to you—there’s never such a thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and throughout university was generally unwarranted. There are abundant support structures in place—from staff to fellow students—ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey in solitude. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to harmonize academic pressures with enjoyment, even amidst taxing times like exams and deadlines.

To anyone on the verge of starting their university adventure: leap forward, remain true to yourself, and don’t shy away from seeking assistance. You’ll discover your niche, just as I have.
