### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the path forward. I was about to embark on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into this new phase felt like a considerable challenge. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable memories. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your top worries. On my initial day in student housing, I was so apprehensive that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to reach out for introductions. However, as I write this now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has turned into a second home for me, and all it required was stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging with fellow students experiencing the same feelings.
So, what lessons have I taken from this? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample opportunities and icebreaker events to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to connect with others who share your passions and ideals.
#### Navigating the Academic Strain
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level studies. The shift from A-levels was significant, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I doubted my capabilities, particularly when observing others study effectively while I struggled with certain topics.
What made a difference for me? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I found something difficult to understand, it was likely that my peers were facing similar challenges. The best decision I made was to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or professors. Learning to seek help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
#### The Excellent Support from Faculty and Pastoral Care
A highlight of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely care about students’ welfare and academic achievement. They comprehend the difficulties we encounter and foster open communication throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral care until later on, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be extraordinarily beneficial. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with lecturers and support staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
In reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehensions and doubts I experienced before starting university were largely unwarranted. There is an abundance of available support, both from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to manage academic challenges while having an enjoyable university experience.
To anyone preparing to begin their own university adventure: embrace the possibilities, seek help when necessary, and above all, relish the experience!
