**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone inherently shy and introverted, diving right into such an experience was outside of my comfort zone. Now, when I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided, and where do I currently stand?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
A major challenge I encountered was the task of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern that’s on your mind as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, shortly before the term commenced, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—individuals who have become like family to me.
What did I discover? I found that taking the plunge at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, that’s okay! There are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others in similar situations. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse range of people in the course and the university, you’ll definitely find those who click with you.
### Confronting the Academic Load and Challenges
Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was indeed notable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more marked. Being immersed in such a challenging environment can shake your self-confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What equipped me to navigate this was the knowledge that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This was probably the most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year—never hesitate to seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
### The Value of Staff Support
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about your success and grasp the challenges students endure. They keep in regular contact with us throughout the year, addressing any issues we encounter. Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect more with the staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. My biggest lesson from this experience is to fully leverage the support at your disposal—you can never have too much help!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension and anxiety I faced before and during university were largely unwarranted. There is an abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, and you are never truly alone in your challenges. Most importantly, I have learned how to balance having fun while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
