### Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been quite shy and introverted, embarking on this new chapter felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

#### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships

One of the foremost challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could likely be one of your main concerns as well. I recall my initial day in student housing—spending the whole day in my room, too shy to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.

Imperial has come to feel like a second home for me, and all it required was a little small talk with fellow students who were experiencing the same feelings. My key lesson? Take that bold step at the start of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to reach out to others. Most importantly, just be genuine—Imperial is teeming with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to find peers who think like you.

#### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant hurdle was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite considerable, and the shift from first to second term felt even steeper. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying diligently.

What aided me was the realization that everyone faces difficulties at some stage. If something doesn’t make sense to you, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The most beneficial action you can take is to ask for assistance—whether it’s from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to seek support is one of the most essential skills you can develop in your first year.

#### The Significance of Support Systems

Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are truly amazing. They sincerely want students to excel and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until the end of the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of all the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt before embarking on my university journey was mostly unwarranted. There are numerous support systems established, from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in facing challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I am never alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university experience is achievable.

If you are about to embark on your path at Imperial, embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. It’s a life-changing experience, and you will emerge from it stronger than you ever thought possible.
