**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering Studies**

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about the future. As someone who used to be quite timid and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I see it as a period of personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a significant worry for you as well. On my first day of moving into my residence—just a few days prior to the start of term—I was so apprehensive that I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too timid to venture out and introduce myself.
Now, looking back, I can say with assurance that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has turned into a second home, and the individuals I’ve encountered here feel like family. The secret? Taking that initial step. Even if it feels uncomfortable initially, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to discover people who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Rigor
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, particularly when witnessing others study hard.
Nevertheless, one of the most important lessons I absorbed was that I wasn’t isolated in this struggle. If I found something difficult to grasp, it was likely that others did too. The most effective way to navigate these obstacles was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Pursuing help is one of the most crucial abilities to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Seeking Assistance
This leads me to another important insight: the remarkable support network within the Materials Science department. The faculty truly wants students to thrive and are always ready to lend a hand. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and actively engage with us to resolve any issues.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a Year Well-being Representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and engaging with them can significantly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of my initial apprehensions were unfounded. The anxiety I experienced before starting university, and even throughout the year, was alleviated by the remarkable support from both faculty and peers. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that it is feasible to manage academic pressures while enjoying a fulfilling university life.
For anyone on the brink of embarking on their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, be genuine, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when necessary. The trials you encounter will promote your growth, and the connections you forge will transform university into an unforgettable journey.
