**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding the path ahead. As someone typically shy and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Fostering Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I confronted at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I vividly remember my first day settling into student housing—I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I remained in my room the whole day.
Now, as I look back, I can confidently affirm that I’ve developed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve found a new family at Imperial, and it all began with stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small talks with those sharing similar experiences.
So, what did I learn? First and foremost, taking that courageous step is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be ample ice-breaker activities and occasions to connect with others. Secondly, the most authentic approach you can take is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge involved adjusting to the workload and elevated complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It was easy to become overwhelmed, especially when observing others study and beginning to question my own abilities.
What helped me persevere was the realization that everyone was grappling with similar difficulties. If I was confused about a concept, it was likely that others were too. The vital lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year—reach out to your classmates and instructors whenever you need help.
### The Significance of Reaching Out for Help
This brings me to another essential point: the remarkable support network within the Materials department. The staff genuinely desire for students to succeed and are consistently open to conversations regarding both academic and personal challenges. They recognize the pressures that students encounter and actively strive to support us.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position connected me with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are countless support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one needs to face challenges in isolation. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to balance academic demands with the enjoyment of university life.
To any future students feeling apprehensive about embarking on university: take the leap, reach out for help, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you might just discover a second home along the journey.
