**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been somewhat shy and reserved, stepping into this new phase seemed daunting. Now, looking back, I can see a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-making
One of the most intimidating facets of commencing university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day of living in student housing, just prior to the term kicking off, I spent an entire day in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with straightforward chats with others who were feeling just as apprehensive as I was.
So, what lesson did I glean? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are plenty of icebreaker activities and social events designed to encourage interaction with others. Most importantly, just be true to yourself. With a diverse student population, you’re sure to encounter people who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Struggles
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted when surrounded by diligent peers, and there were moments when I doubted my capabilities.
What guided me through was the realization that everyone faces challenges at some point. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others do too. The best course of action is to seek help—whether it’s from classmates or professors. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
One of the highlights of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff earnestly desire for students to succeed and are always receptive to feedback and concerns. They recognize the obstacles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.
Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I made a bold choice to become a year well-being representative, enabling me to forge connections with faculty members. Building relationships with your professors and staff can be immensely advantageous, and there are many avenues to pursue this. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was frequently unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, ranging from staff to fellow students, to guide you through any difficulties. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to manage academic demands alongside a fulfilling university journey.
