### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I readied myself to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown was intimidating, particularly for someone like myself who had typically been more introverted. Now, as I reflect on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the start was forming new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this could be a primary worry for you as well. I recall my first day in student housing, where I stayed confined in my room, too anxious to go outside and introduce myself. However, as I write this now, I can assert that I’ve established some of my most meaningful friendships.

What did this experience teach me? Taking that initial step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others in similar situations. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best policy. With a vibrant and varied student community, you’re sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Challenges

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened demands and complexities of university-level studies. The transition from A-levels was evident, and moving from the first to second term proved to be even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others study diligently.

What helped me navigate this period? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I found a topic difficult, there’s a good chance others did as well. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or academic staff. Seeking help is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Interacting with Faculty

On the topic of support, the Materials Science department at Imperial is deeply committed to student achievement. The staff are aware of the challenges we encounter and actively strive to assist us. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had explored it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a student well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the assistance available—you can never have too much support!

### Final Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that many of my initial concerns were unwarranted. The encouragement from staff and fellow students made a significant impact. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s possible to juggle academic challenges with a fulfilling university experience.

If you are about to embark on your own journey at Imperial, my suggestion is straightforward: take that first step, ask for help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated.
