**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a touch of fear regarding what was about to unfold. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had generally been introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained from this experience, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was making friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my first day in student housing, right before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly claim to have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has truly become a second home, and all it took was that initial effort—striking up casual conversations with others who were navigating the same situation.

So, what did I take away from this? Firstly, making that initial effort at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreakers and opportunities to connect. Secondly, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the rigorous academic workload and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels was quite striking, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence was sometimes tough—witnessing others studying fervently occasionally led me to question my own pace.

What aided me through this phase was the realization that we were all in similar boats. If I was grappling with a concept, it was likely that others were, too. The crucial lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether reaching out to classmates or asking staff for advice, support is readily available.

### The Value of Engaging with Instructors

On the subject of support, one of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the staff members. They genuinely care about student success and are always willing to discuss any challenges we might encounter.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources until later in the academic year, but I wish I had engaged with them sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative. This position helped me forge connections with faculty members, which proved incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with lecturers and support personnel, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Tap into the support available to you—you can never have too much help.

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There are abundant support systems available, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to feel isolated. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to balance academic pressures with enjoying university life, maximizing every opportunity presented.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that first step, seek assistance when needed, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated.
