**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding what the future held. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been somewhat shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize it as a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous memorable experiences. But what have I gained from this, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
One of the foremost obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. If you are a future student, this could also be a significant worry for you. On my initial day in student accommodation, I was so overwhelmed that I remained in my room all day, too anxious to meet others. However, as the year unfolded, I forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with light conversations with those who shared my situation.
So, what did I take away from this? Taking the initiative is always beneficial. Even if you’re not entirely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is the best way to connect. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the intensity of the coursework and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second semester was even more demanding. At times, I questioned my competence, especially when I observed others studying and felt inadequate.
What helped me persevere was realizing that I was not alone. If I struggled with a topic, it was likely that others were as well. The key takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Be it from classmates or professors, asking for help is one of the most valuable skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One aspect that truly impressed me was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely care about students’ success and are consistently receptive to feedback. They comprehend the hurdles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.
Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which fostered relationships with faculty members. This experience proved to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous methods to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main lesson? Make the most of the resources available to you—you can never receive too much support!
### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, my first year at Imperial has illuminated that the fears and worries I harbored before entering university were largely misplaced. With the proper support from faculty and fellow students, I was able to navigate the challenges and experience growth both academically and personally. Most importantly, I learned that I was never truly alone and that it’s entirely possible to relish university life, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
If you’re about to embark on your own academic adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, reach out for help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
