**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the journey that lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite reserved and timid, diving into such an experience was clearly outside my usual comfort zone. Now, as I reflect upon it, I see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and quite a bit of enjoyment! So, what insights did I gain from this journey, and where do I currently find myself?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I faced was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just a few days before the semester commenced, I found myself sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all initiated through casual conversations with fellow students who were just as apprehensive.
So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking the plunge at the outset of the year is always worthwhile. Even if you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable, there’s no need for concern! Numerous ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others abound. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and at the university, you are sure to meet others who resonate with your own personality.
### Addressing the Academic Load
Another substantial challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a notable leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more difficult. Being immersed in such an environment can really impact your self-esteem, especially when you observe others actively studying and begin to question your own capabilities.
What helped me navigate through this was the reminder that we’re all in similar situations. If you struggle with a concept, the likelihood is that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This was arguably the most vital lesson I grasped during my first year. Always feel free to reach out to your classmates or the faculty!
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely want to see you succeed and understand the obstacles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us and were consistently available to hear our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had started utilizing it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are multiple avenues to cultivate relationships with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway here is to fully leverage the support that’s offered. You can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Remarks
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive array of support systems available from both staff and fellow students, I was never on my own. More importantly, I learned how to find enjoyment even in the midst of exam pressures and deadlines.
