**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I feel now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant worry for you as well. On my first day in the student residence, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has become like a second family to me, and it all stemmed from initiating small talks with others in similar situations.

What did I gain from this? Taking that initial step at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared, do not fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another major hurdle was getting accustomed to the workload and the greater complexity of the subjects. The shift from A-levels was apparent, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing others study and assuming they have everything under control.

What assisted me during this period was understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty with a concept, it’s likely that others are facing it too. The most effective strategy during your first year is to reach out for help—be it from peers or instructors. Learning to ask for assistance is essential for both academic achievement and personal health.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most significant aspects of my initial year was the tremendous support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the challenges we encounter and actively strive to support us.

Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing it earlier. At the year’s outset, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative for my group. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to cultivate ties with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most important lesson? Utilize the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.

### Closing Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the concerns and worries I had before commencing university were largely baseless. There is a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to juggle academic challenges while enjoying my university experience.

For anyone on the verge of starting their own university adventure: face the challenges head-on, seek assistance when necessary, and permit yourself to evolve. The experience is what you choose to make of it, and with the proper mindset, it can turn out to be one of the most fulfilling periods of your life.
