**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to begin my inaugural year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Venturing outside of my comfort zone was not something I was accustomed to, but reflecting on the year now, I recognize it as a period rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained from this experience, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered at the outset was the task of forming friendships. If you’re considering enrollment, this may also be a primary worry for you. On my first day at student housing, I felt so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I ended up spending the entire day secluded in my room. Yet here I am today, able to confidently state that I’ve fostered some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

The essential takeaway? Take that plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another significant obstacle was the adjustment to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more strenuous. It’s common to feel overburdened or question your capabilities when you observe others diligently studying.

What aided me in overcoming this? Reminding myself that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The best course of action is to reach out for help—be it from classmates or professors. Seeking assistance is not a sign of weakness; it’s an essential skill that will benefit you throughout your university journey.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

One of the most enriching aspects of my first year was the exceptional support from the faculty. They are genuinely invested in student success and are always open to discussing any challenges we encounter. While I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier.

Taking on the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to interact with staff, which turned out to be tremendously advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your academic experience. My key lesson here? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that pre-university jitters are largely unfounded, and there are numerous support systems designed to assist students in their adjustment. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university life is achievable.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and above all, relish the experience.
