**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
When I reflect back, ten months ago in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainties, and doubts about the future ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite shy and reticent, stepping into this new phase felt like a daunting challenge. In hindsight, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating challenges of starting university was forging new friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, you may resonate with those sentiments. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I chose to stay in my room the entire day. Yet, as I reflect today, I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has evolved into a second family for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and sparking casual conversations with others in similar situations.
What have I discovered? Taking that first step is invariably rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people will abound. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is key. With such a varied student community, you are likely to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimatizing to the demanding workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s all too common to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others who appear to be studying more confidently.
What aided me during this period? Acknowledging that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s highly probable that others are too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from peers or professors. Learning to reach out for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your freshman year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely cares about student success and welcomes feedback openly. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and actively strive to assist us.
Even though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged more with it earlier. At the year’s outset, I took the initiative by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. What stands out to me most? Utilize the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
As I look back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during my university journey was frequently unfounded. Numerous support systems exist—from staff to fellow students—ensuring that no one has to navigate alone. Furthermore, I have learned how to juggle academic demands while savoring my university experience.
If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help, and be true to yourself. You will discover your place, just as I did.
