**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A mere ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding my future. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Exiting my comfort zone was not something I was accustomed to, but reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with self-improvement, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Apprehension of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered was the task of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might also share this concern. On my first day at student housing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, sitting here today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has truly become my second home, and all it took was a little casual conversation with others who were just as apprehensive.

The essential lesson? Take that bold step at the beginning of the year. If anxiety creeps in, fret not—there will be ample ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Above all, just be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated or to question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and presuming they have everything under control.

What aided me during this time was the awareness that we are all in the same situation. If something eludes your understanding, it’s likely others are grappling with it as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your initial year.

### The Value of Assistance from Faculty

In discussing support, the teaching staff within the Materials department are exemplary. They are genuinely invested in the success of students and comprehend the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open with us and offered invaluable guidance.

I didn’t fully capitalize on the available pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I regret not doing so earlier. One of my finest choices was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to nurture connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most important takeaway? Utilize all available support—you can never have too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

Upon reflection, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university was mostly unwarranted. There are abundant support networks available, from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate this transition. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s feasible to juggle academic challenges while enjoying a fulfilling university life.

To anyone poised to embark on their own university adventure: embrace the hurdles, seek assistance when necessary, and most importantly, savor the experience.
