**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation regarding the journey ahead. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, transitioning into this new phase of life felt rather daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a concern for you. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent hours remaining inside my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever had.

I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others in similar circumstances. My biggest lesson? Take that risk at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, countless ice-breaker activities and social gatherings will help facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is home to a diverse community, and you’re likely to find those who share your passions and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous coursework and increased complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and moving from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with assurance.

What aided me during this time was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a certain topic, it’s highly likely that others are too. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Cultivating the ability to seek support is one of the most vital skills you can nurture in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

Regarding support, the teaching staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they sustained regular communication with us, addressing our issues and offering direction.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. One of the best choices I made was stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish meaningful connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and engaging can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Fully utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt before and during the year was often unfounded. There are extensive support networks available, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate difficulties alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to balance academic demands with the joy of university life.

If you’re about to begin your journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is: embrace the experience, seek help when necessary, and don’t hesitate to leave your comfort zone. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about an amazing first year—just as I am now.
