**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the upcoming journey. I was on the brink of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and cautious, diving into an entirely new setting felt daunting. Now, reflecting on my first year, I perceive a path of development, trials, and a host of unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

A significant challenge I confronted at the outset was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may resonate with you. I recall my initial day settling into my accommodations—I spent the entire time in my room, too daunted to step outside and make introductions. However, as I sit here today, I’m pleased to assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I could have wished for.

I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with brief exchanges with individuals navigating the same circumstances. My foremost lesson? Take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker gatherings and chances to meet new people. Above all, just be yourself—Imperial is home to a vibrant mix of personalities, and you’re sure to connect with like-minded folks.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was learning to cope with the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even tougher. There were moments I questioned my abilities, particularly when observing peers studying while I felt overwhelmed.

What enabled me to persevere was the realization that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I was puzzled by something, it was likely others were, too. The most valuable lesson I embraced was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or instructors. Seeking assistance is not a sign of inadequacy; rather, it’s a key skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

A particularly reassuring element of my program has been the outstanding support provided by the teaching staff. They sincerely desire students to thrive and recognize the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication and offered invaluable advice.

Even though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Initially, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative, which facilitated connections with staff members. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors can be immensely rewarding, and there are numerous ways to achieve this. My suggestion? Make the most of the available support—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my journey, my initial year has revealed that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unfounded. There is a tremendous amount of support accessible, both from academic staff and fellow students, to assist in overcoming the hurdles. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never isolated, and I’ve found methods to balance academic challenges with savoring university life.

If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, embrace the journey, take that first step, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll evolve beyond your wildest expectations.
