**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overflowing with anxiety, uncertainty, and a touch of fear regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been somewhat timid and reserved, stepping into this new chapter felt quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize a period marked by growth, challenges, and numerous delightful moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself at this point?
### Navigating the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant and daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, you may find yourself in a similar boat. On my first day in student housing, I was so apprehensive that I spent an entire day in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed friendships that truly matter to me. Imperial has become my second family, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and indulging in casual conversations with others who shared my feelings.
The main lesson? Make the leap early. If you’re feeling uncertain, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to connect with like-minded individuals.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and the complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was evident, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities, especially while observing peers studying rigorously. However, one of the most comforting realizations I had was that everyone else is navigating the same journey. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance others are grappling with it too.
My best advice? Seek assistance. This is arguably one of the most vital skills to cultivate during your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to peers or asking for guidance from faculty, don’t shy away from posing questions.
### Assistance from Faculty and Well-Being Programs
Regarding faculty, the support network within the Materials department is remarkable. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about students’ success, and they recognize the obstacles we encounter. They consistently engage with us throughout the year to address any worries we may have.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, a choice I wish I had made sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a brave step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are myriad ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My biggest insight? Take full advantage of the available support—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I realize that the apprehension I felt before starting university was largely unwarranted. There exist numerous support systems, from faculty to fellow students, that facilitate a smoother transition. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to manage both academic demands and personal enjoyment.
For anyone embarking on their university adventure: take the plunge, seek help, and embrace the journey. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated.
