### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been a time of personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained and how do I view my current situation?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this could be one of your main worries as well. I recall moving into my residence a few days prior to the start of the term and spending a whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with fellow students who were experiencing the same feelings.

So, what have I gleaned? That initial step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, countless ice-breakers and social events will be available to help you engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself—Imperial is teeming with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the workload and the greater complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and seeming to grasp concepts more swiftly than you do.

What aided me through this period was the reminder that everyone faces difficulties at some point. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same confusion. The crucial thing is to seek help—whether from peers or lecturers. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting aspects of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback and concerns. They are aware of the hurdles we face and actively strive to assist us.

I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. One of the wisest decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Wrapping Up

Looking back, this year has shown me that the fears and anxieties I harbored before embarking on my university journey were frequently unfounded. With the right support—from both faculty and fellow students—those concerns became manageable. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and it is indeed possible to balance academic pressures with a fulfilling university life.

If you’re about to embark on your own adventure at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that plunge, seek help when you require it, and embrace every opportunity that comes your way.
