**Reflections on My Initial Year in Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about the road ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman, entering an entirely new setting. As a person who has always been more introverted and reserved, diving into this new experience felt intimidating. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, various challenges, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my position now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was the effort to make friends. This could be one of your primary worries if you’re a future student. I vividly recall my first day of moving into my accommodation—I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet anyone. Yet, sitting here today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has become like a second family to me, and it all started with a little small talk with fellow freshers in the same situation.

So, what did I come to understand? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always a worthwhile endeavor. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, it’s perfectly fine—there will be plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a varied student population, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels was notably steep, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying diligently. However, what truly helped me was the realization that we’re all experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it is likely that others are grappling with it as well.

The key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, asking for help is vital.

### Valuing Engagement with Faculty

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback and dialogues. They recognize the obstacles students encounter and are more than willing to offer assistance.

I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, but I wish I had reached out earlier. At the year’s beginning, I took a proactive step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to interact with faculty, and doing so significantly enhances your university experience. My greatest insight? Take full advantage of the available support—you can never have too much help!

### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting on the past year, I have learned that a lot of the worries I harbored prior to university were unfounded. There exists a vast array of support from both faculty and fellow students to assist in tackling various challenges. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly isolated, and enjoying university life amidst the demands of exams and deadlines is indeed achievable.

If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t shy away from asking for help when necessary. You may be astonished by how much you evolve throughout this experience.
