**Insights from My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what the future held. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university. As someone with a naturally shy and introverted disposition, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. Reflecting on the journey now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a potential student, this may be one of your primary concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so overwhelmed at the thought of meeting new faces that I confined myself to my room the entire day, evading social interactions.

Yet, as time progressed, I gradually forged meaningful friendships—some of the best I’ve ever experienced. I found a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others who were equally apprehensive.

What was the takeaway? Taking that first step is always a worthy endeavor. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others await you. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a vibrant student community, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the workload and the greater complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was marked by a significant leap, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It was easy to become daunted, particularly when surrounded by peers who seemed to easily grasp the material.

What assisted me during this time? Acknowledging that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I was struggling with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The essential lesson here is to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. Pursuing assistance is an invaluable skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the most rewarding elements of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the dedicated staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback and open dialogue regarding our difficulties.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated relationship-building with staff members. This turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with lecturers and tutors, and engaging with them can greatly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before and during my time at university was frequently unwarranted. There are abundant support mechanisms in place, from faculty to fellow students, to help you tackle challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never alone and that it’s entirely feasible to juggle academic pressures while enjoying a fulfilling university experience.

If you’re about to embark on your university journey, embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. You certainly won’t regret it!
