### Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was awash with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university, and venturing into the unfamiliar felt overwhelming. Being someone who has traditionally been shy and introverted, immersing myself in a new setting posed a significant challenge. Now, reflecting on my inaugural academic year, I recognize it as a journey rich with personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might feel this concern acutely too. I recall my first day in student housing—I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life.

The essential lesson? Take that initial leap. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to engage with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter peers who resonate with your interests and principles.

#### Navigating the Academic Hurdles

The shift from A-levels to university-level studies presented yet another significant challenge. The volume of work was considerably greater, and the complexity of the material escalated, particularly from the first to the second term. It’s easy to become daunted or question your abilities when observing others studying diligently.

What aided me through this phase was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, odds are others are too. The most constructive action you can take is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or educators. Mastering the skill of seeking help early on is one of the most beneficial abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

#### The Significance of Seeking Assistance

One of the most unexpected revelations for me was the level of support offered by the faculty in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and are consistently receptive to feedback and discussion around any difficulties we encounter. Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

Earlier in the year, I made a bold decision to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to connect with academic staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Leverage the available support—you can never receive too much assistance!

#### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the worries I had before starting university were mostly unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, from faculty to fellow students, to help you effectively manage challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I am never truly alone in this journey. Despite the pressures of examinations and deadlines, I have also learned to appreciate the experience and capitalize on my time at university.

If you’re gearing up to embark on your first year, welcome the trials, seek assistance as needed, and remember to cherish the journey. It is a life-changing experience, and you will emerge from it stronger, more self-assured, and with enduring friendships.
