**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally introverted person, immersing myself in this unfamiliar setting felt intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been a journey of personal development, obstacles, and many unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you are a future student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day at the student accommodation, I was so daunted by the thought of mingling that I spent the whole day in my room, steering clear of any social interactions. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
What aided me? Taking that first step and engaging in casual conversations with others who were in similar circumstances. If you’re feeling apprehensive, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With a diverse cohort, you’re certain to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another notable challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more taxing. At times, I felt overwhelmed and questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others immersed in their studies.
What helped me persevere? Reminding myself that everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I had difficulty grasping a concept, it was likely that others were too. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or professors. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness but an essential step towards thriving at university.
### The Significance of Staff Support
One of the most treasured elements of my first year was the encouragement from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely wish for students to flourish and are always receptive to discussing any academic or personal difficulties we encounter. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner.
Assuming the role of a year well-being representative enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and engaging with them can significantly enrich your university life. My most important takeaway? Capitalize on the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting back, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university was largely unfounded. With proper backing from both staff and fellow students, I was able to tackle challenges and develop both academically and personally. Most crucially, I learned that it is feasible to strike a balance between hard work and enjoyment, even during demanding periods such as exams and deadlines.
To anyone preparing to enter university, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’re never on this journey alone!
