**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial, and as someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into this new experience felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year full of development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a potential student, this might also be a concern for you. I recall my first day settling into accommodation—I was so apprehensive that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with people who were experiencing the same feelings as I was.

So, what did I come to understand? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be plenty of ice-breaker functions and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain authentic—Imperial is bustling with diverse students, and you’re likely to find individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another obstacle was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was noticeable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. At times, I questioned my abilities when I observed others studying and felt as though I wasn’t keeping pace.

What aided me in persevering was the understanding that everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I struggled with something, it was likely that others were too. The best lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Asking for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Connecting with Staff

A standout aspect of my experience has been the amazing support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about our success and well-being, and they make a concerted effort to communicate with us about any obstacles we encounter.

Even though I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done it earlier. Initially, I took the step of becoming a year well-being representative, allowing me to forge connections with staff members. This turned out to be incredibly beneficial, and I strongly advise finding methods to engage with faculty. The support available is designed to help you thrive—make the most of it!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the apprehensions I had prior to starting university were unfounded. There is always support accessible, whether from staff or fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance academic challenges with enjoying university life.

For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take risks, seek help, and seize every opportunity. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about an extraordinary first year.
