**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself enveloped in nerves, uncertainties, and a touch of trepidation regarding the journey ahead. I was set to commence my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who naturally tends to be shy and reserved, embarking on this new phase felt quite daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year filled with growth, challenges, and countless memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the primary challenges I confronted early on was the task of befriending others. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your main worries too. On my first day in student housing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.

The crucial lesson? Take that first step. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breakers and social opportunities will be available to assist you in connecting with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re bound to meet individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the rigors and heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels was distinct, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more intense. It can be easy to get overwhelmed, particularly when witnessing others study and beginning to doubt your own skills.

What kept me motivated was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find a concept difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are having a tough time too. The best course of action is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from your peers or your instructors. Learning to seek help is among the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Seeking Assistance

On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely strive for student success and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained steady communication with us, addressing our issues and providing direction.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the academic year, but I regret not utilizing it sooner. One of my best choices was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important takeaway? Never hesitate to leverage the resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much support.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the worries and apprehensions I harbored prior to attending university were largely unwarranted. An abundance of support systems exists, ranging from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university experience is indeed possible.

If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, request help when needed, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
