**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what the future held. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year of [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been somewhat introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the year gone by, I now recognize it as a time of substantial personal development, hurdles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming New Friendships

A significant obstacle I encountered was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be one of your main worries as well. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just prior to the term’s commencement, I spent an entire day cooped up in my room, feeling too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here now, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has truly become a second home, and all it required was a little casual conversation with others who were in similar circumstances.

So, what have I discovered? Taking the initiative is invariably worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, an array of ice-breakers and social gatherings will be available to help you connect with your peers. Most crucially, simply be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even tougher. Surrounded by diligent colleagues, it’s easy to feel inundated, but I soon realized that everyone faces difficulties at some point.

What’s the best strategy to cope with this? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most important lesson I learned during my first year. Whether from fellow students or teachers, asking for support can make a substantial difference. If you are grappling with a particular topic, chances are others are too—so don’t be shy about reaching out.

### The Value of Interacting with Faculty

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my first year was interacting with the faculty. The staff in the Materials department are incredibly supportive and sincerely desire for students to thrive. They recognize the trials we encounter and uphold transparent communication throughout the academic year.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later on, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking the initiative to connect with faculty can be tremendously advantageous. Early in the term, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My foremost takeaway? Make the most of the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of my initial apprehensions were unwarranted. The various challenges of university life—whether of a social or academic nature—can always be navigated with the right support network. This year has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone, and it’s feasible to harmonize enjoyment with academic responsibilities, even amidst stressful periods such as exams and deadlines.

For those about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when needed, and embrace all opportunities that come your way.
