**Looking Back on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what was to come. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, immersing myself in a brand new environment was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize how much I’ve developed, the hurdles I’ve overcome, and the enjoyment I’ve experienced. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Friendships: A Challenging Yet Fulfilling Task
One of the most anxiety-inducing tasks I encountered at the beginning of university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be something on your mind as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and connect with others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who have become like a second family.
What did this experience teach me? It taught me that taking initiative at the start of the year is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be an abundance of ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with fellow newcomers. And above all, just be yourself! With such a diverse array of personalities throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Workload and Course Complexity
Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the workload and the challenging nature of the course content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even more demanding. Being in an environment where everyone seems to be deeply engrossed in their studies can occasionally lead to self-doubt.
However, what aided me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing a similar journey. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that many others feel just as confused. The most pivotal lesson I learned in my first year was to seek assistance—whether it be from peers or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out when you’re facing difficulties; it’s an essential skill that will benefit you throughout your university experience.
### Assistance from Faculty: An Essential Resource
Speaking of support, I cannot stress enough the level of encouragement from the staff within the Materials department. They genuinely wish for your success and fully comprehend the challenges students face. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us regarding any issues we might encounter.
I didn’t maximize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not utilizing it sooner. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which helped me build rapport with the staff. Cultivating relationships with faculty members is incredibly advantageous, and there are numerous opportunities to do so. My key takeaway here? Make the most of all the support provided to you—you can never have an excess of it!
### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Anxiety and Achieving Balance
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly unwarranted. There are countless support systems available, from staff to peers, that can help mitigate those worries. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to find joy even amidst the rigors of exams and deadlines.
