**Reflecting on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and ambiguity regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what exactly did I gain from this experience, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This can frequently be one of the most daunting components of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely something that concerns you as well. On my very first day moving into my residence, just a few days ahead of the term officially commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with fellow students who were equally apprehensive. So, what did I learn? I realized that taking that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and opportunities to interact with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who echo your interests and principles.
### Facing the Academic Challenges
Another major obstacle was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even more demanding. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and worry that you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in navigating this was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, chances are, others are grappling with it too. The most vital takeaway from my first year was to seek assistance. Don’t hesitate to approach your classmates or instructors when you encounter difficulties. Everyone is there to lend a helping hand.
### The Crucial Role of Staff Support
Speaking of staff, I cannot emphasize enough how exceptional the teaching and support personnel in the Materials department are. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face hurdles. Throughout the academic year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, addressing our worries and offering assistance.
I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the year was nearly over, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff better, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so is amongst the most positive steps you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway from this experience is to capitalize on the help that is available to you. You can never have too much support!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has illuminated that the apprehension I felt before and during university was primarily misplaced. With the broad spectrum of support available from both staff and fellow students, I quickly realized that I was never alone in my challenges. I also learned how to navigate the enjoyment of university life while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
