**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and cautious, embracing the unknown was not something I was familiar with. Now, as I reflect on the academic year gone by, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings of anxiety. On my move-in day, just days before the semester started, I remained in my room all day, too anxious to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with light conversations and bonding with others experiencing the same uncertainties.
So, what did I glean from this experience? Taking that first daring step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be your authentic self. With the variety of individuals in your program and at the university, you’re sure to find those who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct escalation from A-levels, and an even more pronounced leap from the first semester to the second. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when you notice others studying diligently and appearing to excel. However, one insight that assisted me was recognizing that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re puzzled about something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson I picked up in my first year—never hesitate to ask for help from your peers and instructors.
### Establishing Connections with Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about your success and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open regarding any challenges we faced. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, I now wish I had engaged with it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to foster relationships with the staff, which proved tremendously beneficial. There are countless ways to connect with faculty, and doing so is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make for yourself. My key takeaway here is to fully utilize the support that’s provided—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehensive feelings I experienced before and during my time at university were often unfounded. There is an abundance of support available from both faculty and fellow students. I’ve understood that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
