**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I was clouded with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Transitioning from a previously timid and reserved individual to this fresh chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on my inaugural year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
Among the most significant hurdles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. If you are a potential student, you might share this concern as well. I vividly recall my first day in student accommodation—I was so overwhelmed that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to mingle with others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.
Imperial has turned into a second home for me, and it all began with stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small chats with fellow students who were in a similar situation. My key takeaway? Make the effort early on. If you’re not feeling ready, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with new people. Above all, be authentic. Given the diversity of the student body, you are sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was getting used to the academic workload. The shift from A-levels to university was distinctly observable, and the transition from the first to the second term proved to be even tougher. There were times when I felt swamped and questioned my capabilities, especially when I noticed others studying hard.
What helped me navigate through this was the realization that everyone faced similar challenges. If I was having difficulty grasping a concept, it was likely that others were too. My top tip? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is one of the crucial skills to cultivate during your first year. Whether reaching out to peers or seeking help from professors, always feel free to inquire.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One of the most comforting elements of my course has been the exceptional support from the faculty. They genuinely care about student success and comprehend the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open and offered us valuable insights.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I truly wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely helpful. There are multiple avenues to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Final Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has revealed to me that many of the worries I harbored prior to starting university were baseless. With adequate backing from faculty and peers, challenges become far more navigable. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university experience is indeed achievable.
For anyone on the brink of starting their own adventure at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: seize the opportunities, seek help when necessary, and above all, relish the experience.
