**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about the road ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and reserved, transitioning into this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A major challenge I encountered early on was the difficulty in forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of meeting new individuals that I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, steering clear of social engagements. However, as time went by, I ended up building some of the strongest bonds I’ve ever experienced.
The main takeaway? Take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be an abundance of ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you are sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating Academic Hurdles
Shifting from A-levels to university-level studies presented another major obstacle. The demands were greater, and the difficulty level escalated, particularly transitioning from the first term to the second. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others studying and feeling like I was lagging behind.
What propelled me forward was the realization that I wasn’t solitary in my struggles—many of my classmates were enduring similar challenges. The best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, asking for help is essential. Everyone is navigating similar waters, and there’s no disgrace in acknowledging when you need support.
### Recognizing the Value of Seeking Help
One of the most rewarding elements of my first year was the remarkable support I received from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and academic achievements. They comprehend the hurdles we encounter and foster open communication year-round.
Even though I didn’t fully embrace pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to engage with faculty members and gain valuable insights into the department. There are numerous avenues for interacting with faculty, and doing so can yield significant benefits. My biggest lesson? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, my first year at university has shown me that many of my early anxieties were unfounded. Whether it came to forming friendships, managing coursework, or reaching out for help, I discovered that I was never completely by myself. More importantly, I learned how to balance academic demands with enjoyment, maximizing my university experience.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, be aware that challenges await, but so do chances for growth and connection. Take that plunge—you won’t regret it.
