**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been a journey of personal development, obstacles, and many unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A major obstacle I encountered was making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant worry for you as well. I vividly remember my first day moving into student housing—I was so intimidated that I isolated myself in my room the entire day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.

Jump to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were feeling the same way.

So, what did I take away from this experience? Firstly, that crucial first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared right off the bat, don’t fret—plenty of social events and chances to meet new people are out there. Secondly, the most important thing is to be authentic. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was getting used to the increased workload and complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your skills, especially when you observe peers studying and assume they have it all under control.

What guided me through this was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are facing the same issue. The essential lesson here is to reach out for help—whether that’s from fellow students or teaching staff. This became the most critical takeaway from my first year: never hesitate to seek assistance.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely desire students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and discussions about the challenges we encounter. I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until the end of the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the year’s onset, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the resources at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Looking back, this year has made me realize that the apprehension I experienced before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. Numerous support systems are in place, from staff to fellow students, to help you tackle any challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never alone and that balancing academic demands with a rewarding and enjoyable university life is entirely feasible.

If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, my recommendation is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace every opportunity that comes your way.
