### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, doubts, and anxieties regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally introverted person, transitioning into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I currently?
#### Conquering the Fear of Connecting with Others
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was forging new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this could be a major worry for you as well. On my first day in student housing, right before term started, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, here I am today, confidently declaring that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.
Imperial has turned into a second home for me, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with others who were equally uncertain. My greatest lesson? Take that leap early! If you feel reluctant, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a diverse student cohort, you’re likely to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous coursework and increased complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term posed an even greater challenge. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying diligently.
What got me through this transition was the understanding that everyone encounters difficulties at some point. If something is unclear to you, it’s probable that others are grappling with the same issue. The best course of action is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to request support early on is one of the most invaluable skills to develop in your first year.
#### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most comforting aspects of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback and discussions on any challenges we face.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members. Familiarizing yourself with your professors and academic advisors can be extremely advantageous, and there are various ways to get to know them. My suggestion? Make the most of all available support—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of my initial anxieties were unfounded. There is a wealth of support available from both staff and fellow students, and no one is truly alone in their challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to navigate academic pressures while enjoying university life.
For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my message is straightforward: dive into the experience, seek help whenever necessary, and don’t hesitate to take that first step. You’ll be amazed at the growth you achieve along the way.
