**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been somewhat shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was filled with personal growth, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I feel today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the primary obstacles I encountered early in my journey was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, now I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—connections that truly feel like family.
What did I take away from this experience? It’s critical to take that first step. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and the intricate nature of the course content. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more challenging. At times, it was easy to feel overwhelmed and question my capabilities, especially when observing my peers study fervently.
What aided me during these times was the understanding that I was not alone—many of my classmates were navigating the same obstacles. If you find something confusing, chances are others are struggling with it too. The best course of action is to seek assistance, whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can nurture in your first year.
### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most delightful surprises of my first year was the supportive and approachable nature of the Materials Science staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.
At the outset, I took the plunge and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Conclusion
Looking back, this year has revealed that many of the fears I harbored before entering university were baseless. An abundance of support exists, both from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance academic demands with enjoyment.
If you’re about to embark on your university journey, understand that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. But also remember that with time, support, and a willingness to venture beyond your comfort zone, you’ll discover your niche—just as I did.
