### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and anticipation as I geared up to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial. As someone who has usually been quite introverted, entering this new phase felt quite challenging. Now, in retrospect, I reflect on a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was developing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also rank as one of your primary worries. On my first day in student housing, I was so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to meet others. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim to have formed some of the deepest friendships of my life.
The crucial takeaway? Take that initial leap without hesitation. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is rich with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Adjusting to the Academic Rigors
The shift from A-level studies to university academics posed another significant challenge. The workload and difficulty surged dramatically, especially transitioning from the first to the second term. At times, witnessing others study efficiently led me to question my own capabilities.
What enabled me to persevere was the awareness that everyone encounters struggles at different points. If you find something challenging, it’s likely that others are navigating the same issues. My best advice? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, asking for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
#### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
One of the most gratifying elements of my first year was the opportunity to connect with the faculty. The Materials Science instructors are exceptionally supportive and genuinely invested in the success of their students. They recognize the hurdles we face and maintain open lines of communication to address our queries.
Although I didn’t fully tap into pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a well-being representative allowed me to forge connections with staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and engaging with them can significantly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support offered—there’s no such thing as too much help!
#### Major Lessons from My First Year
Reflecting back, this year has revealed to me that the anxieties prior to university are frequently unfounded and that help is always within reach, whether it comes from faculty or fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that achieving a balance between academic demands and a fulfilling university life is entirely feasible.
If you’re on the brink of starting your adventure at Imperial, welcome the challenges, seek help when necessary, and above all, relish the experience. It’s a transformative phase, and you’ll emerge from it stronger and more self-assured than ever.
