**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and concern about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, hurdles, and countless unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may be a concern you share. I recall my first day moving into the student residence—I was so fearful of introducing myself that I spent the whole day in my room. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve made some of the most remarkable friends I’ve ever had.

Imperial has truly become a second home for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others in similar situations. My most important lesson? Take that leap early on. If you’re feeling apprehensive, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and social events to facilitate connections. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re bound to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was particularly tough. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when I witnessed others studying and felt as though I was lagging behind.

What enabled me to persevere was realizing that I wasn’t the only one—many of my classmates were undergoing similar trials. If something confuses you, it’s likely that others feel the same. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek help, whether from friends or instructors. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most valuable abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

One of the most comforting elements of my journey has been the exceptional backing from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely cares about student success and understands the challenges we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year and are always eager to assist.

Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the fears and worries I held before starting university were mostly unfounded. With adequate support from faculty and fellow students, I was able to face challenges head-on and maximize my experience at Imperial. Most importantly, I learned that I am never alone and discovered how to juggle academic pressures with enjoyment.

If you are about to embark on your university journey and feeling anxious, understand that this is completely normal. Embrace the forthcoming opportunities, seek support when necessary, and don’t forget to relish the experience.
