**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting now, I realize it has been a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was establishing friendships. If you’re considering this field, this might be a significant concern for you as well. I vividly recall moving into my accommodation a few days prior to the term’s start and spending an entire day confined to my room, feeling too nervous to venture out and meet others. However, fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve built some of the most wonderful friendships of my life. Imperial has come to feel like my second home, and it all began with stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with peers who were in a similar situation.

So, what was my takeaway? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and moving from the first to second term felt even more pronounced. At times, self-doubt crept in, especially when I observed my peers studying and felt I was falling behind.

What guided me through this was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. If I found something perplexing, it was likely that others were too. The best decision I made was to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Cultivating the ability to seek support is among the most crucial skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Significance of Seeking Help

Speaking of assistance, the faculty within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to flourish and are aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered a multitude of support options.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had started sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are countless ways to establish relationships with faculty, and doing so can tremendously enhance your university experience. My key lesson? Utilize the resources available—you can never have too much support.

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to beginning university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There exist numerous support systems, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey in isolation. Most crucially, I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands while savoring my time at university.

For anyone preparing to embark on their own university journey: welcome the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and don’t hesitate to put yourself out there. You’ll experience growth in unexpected ways, and you may very well have the time of your life.
