**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, doubt, and fears about what was coming next. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and somewhat introverted individual, embarking on this new journey felt like plunging into unknown waters. Now, looking back, I recognize a year marked by development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my very first day in student housing, I spent hours in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, as the year unfolded, I built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has evolved into a second home, and all it took was a few straightforward conversations with individuals who found themselves in the same situation.

What did I come to understand? Taking that first step is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and social chances to help you connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied student population, you are sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adjusting to the academic intensity and the elevated complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was apparent, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skills when among dedicated peers.

What aided me in navigating this? Reminding myself that everyone was experiencing the same difficulties. If I found a topic challenging, it was likely that others were too. The most significant lesson I learned was the value of seeking assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Asking for help is not a weakness but an essential aspect of the educational journey.

### Assistance from Staff and Well-being Resources

A standout element of my first year was the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty truly wants students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the struggles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. One of my best choices was becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to engage with faculty members and gain a greater awareness of the resources available. Building relationships with your professors and academic staff can be immensely helpful, and I highly recommend utilizing the support systems in place.

### Important Lessons from My First Year

Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that many of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. Support is always available, whether it’s from staff or fellow students. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never isolated on this journey. Despite the stress of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to appreciate my university experience and make the most of my time at Imperial.

For anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and savor the experience. You will grow more than you ever imagined.
