**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was experiencing a whirlpool of anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding the journey ahead. As a first-year student ready to embark on my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself entering uncharted waters. Being naturally shy and reserved, plunging into this experience felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been a journey laden with personal development, various hurdles, and fantastic moments. What insights have I gained, and what is my standing today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the start was the quest to forge friendships. If you are an incoming student, this is likely on your mind as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just prior to the commencement of the term, I confined myself to my room all day, feeling too nervous to step out and meet others. Yet, sitting here now, I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I could have hoped for.

Imperial has become like a second home for me, and it merely required me to break free from my comfort zone and initiate small conversations with fellow students experiencing the same feelings. My most significant lesson? Take the plunge. Even if you don’t feel equipped, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to help facilitate connections. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is brimming with a variety of individuals, and you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous workload and the heightened level of content difficulty. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. I experienced moments of self-doubt, especially when witnessing others studying and seemingly grasping concepts with ease.

What aided me during this period was the realization that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles—numerous peers were grappling with similar issues. If you’re puzzled by a topic, it’s likely others are too. The crucial element is to seek assistance. This is one of the pivotal lessons I embraced in my first year. Whether it involves connecting with classmates or reaching out to professors for guidance, requesting help is vital for success.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

A key highlight of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are consistently receptive to communication and feedback. They recognize the challenges students encounter and provide various support mechanisms throughout the academic year.

Even though I didn’t fully tap into pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me foster connections with faculty members. This experience proved remarkably advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Utilize all the support that is available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehensions I experienced prior to starting university were mostly unwarranted. There are numerous support systems readily available, spanning from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in the transition. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone. University presents its own set of challenges—exams, deadlines, and academic stress—but it equally presents opportunities for growth, camaraderie, and enjoyment.

If you’re on the verge of beginning your journey at Imperial, welcome the experience, take that bold step, and keep in mind that support is perpetually within reach.
