**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what awaited me. As a first-year student about to commence my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), the idea of university life seemed intimidating. I wasn’t used to stepping outside my comfort zone. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and many enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I stand at this moment?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the significant obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. For prospective students, this might be a concern that resonates with you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, right before the term began, I felt so daunted that I remained in my room all day, too anxious to mingle. However, reflecting on my experience now, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Imperial has become a second home to me, and all it took was breaking out of my shell and engaging in casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same transition.

What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and instances to meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that being your authentic self is the best strategy. With such a varied student population, you are bound to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Challenges

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened level of difficulty in the material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more daunting. It’s natural to feel swamped or question your abilities, especially when observing others studying rigorously. Yet, I found comfort in knowing that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I found a concept tough to grasp, it was likely that others did too.

The most important lesson I learned? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether from classmates or instructors, asking for assistance is vital. University thrives on collaboration, and there’s no shame in acknowledging when you need support.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the outstanding features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the remarkable support from the faculty. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are always receptive to feedback and dialogue. Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my group. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—there’s no limit to how much help you can seek!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this past year has shown me that the fears and apprehensions I experienced prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. With the right support— from both staff and fellow students—those anxieties became manageable. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I have learned how to balance academic demands with personal enjoyment.

For anyone about to begin their university adventure, my recommendation is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and above all, be authentic. You will find your niche, just as I have.
