**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was ahead. I was on the verge of starting my initial year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was the quest for friendship. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. I recall my first day in student housing—I was so overwhelmed that I stayed in my room the entire day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. Nevertheless, as the year unfolded, I cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it all started with stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating conversations with those in similar situations.
So, what did I discover? Taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others will arise. Most crucially, just be your authentic self. With such a diverse community, you’re certain to encounter kindred spirits.
### Adapting to Academic Challenges
Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to become engulfed in self-doubt when observing others immersed in their studies.
What aided me was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty members. Learning to request help early on stands out as one of the most crucial lessons from my first year.
### The Value of Seeking Assistance
On the subject of assistance, the team in the Materials department is exceptional. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and recognize the challenges we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year and provide various forms of academic and personal support.
I didn’t fully utilize these resources until later in the year, but I wish I had tapped into them sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Never shy away from seeking the support you need—you can never have too much help!
### Closing Reflections
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. Numerous support systems are in place, from faculty to peers, ensuring no one has to feel isolated. Most importantly, I’ve learned to juggle academic challenges while savoring university life.
If you’re on the brink of starting your own adventure at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when needed, and make the most of the experience. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated.
